Falls & Fall Prevention

Falls are the leading cause of lost independence in older adults — and among the most preventable. Risk assessment, home modifications, recovery, and prevention that actually works.

Why falls are the number one threat to independence

For adults over 65, a single serious fall is often the event that ends independent living. One in three seniors falls each year, and a hip fracture carries a mortality risk in the first year that rivals many cancers. Fall prevention is not fussing — it is the highest-leverage thing most families can do to keep a parent at home.

The risk assessment: what actually predicts a fall

The strongest predictors are a history of falling, gait and balance problems, medication side effects (especially sedatives and blood pressure drugs), vision changes, and home hazards. A simple sit-to-stand test and a review of the medication list catch most of the modifiable risk. Ask the family doctor or pharmacist for a falls-focused medication review.

Home modifications that matter most

Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower, removing loose rugs, adding night lighting on the path to the bathroom, and a raised toilet seat prevent more falls than almost any device. Most cost under $200. We cover BC funding options and what to install first in the Home Modifications guide.

Recovering confidence after a fall

Guide coming soon

After a fall, fear of falling again causes many seniors to move less — which weakens the very muscles that prevent the next fall. Structured strength and balance programs reverse this. Tracking activity and near-misses over time, rather than waiting for the next emergency, is exactly what MaPa Care is built to do.
